Biographical Text In 1919, the Georgia Memorial Commission held a memorial service for Georgia soldiers who died during World War I. A “special provision” was made to allow the relatives of African American soldiers to sit on the main floor of the auditorium. He is listed among the soldiers of the “fallen heroes of Fulton County” monument at <a href="http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM2348_Pershing_Point_Park_Atlanta_GA">Pershing Point</a> erected by the War Mothers Association in 1920. Title A name given to the resource Parade of African American Regimental Band in France, c. 1917-1919 Description An account of the resource In France, James Reese Europe’s 369th Infantry Regimental band was elevated as celebrities, due in part to their introduction of jazz and ragtime music to the country through public concerts and special performances. The French people were mesmerized by the sounds coming from the musicians’ instruments. In their eyes, African American soldiers were part of the Allied forces that came to liberate their country from the German assault. The sense of dignity and pride inspired by these experiences would be a turning point in the transformation of African American men upon their return to America. In Crisis, Du Bois used his editorial pen to demand on behalf of the American Negro the right to serve as soldiers and officers on the battlefields of Europe.
