He also held a commission in the Officers Reserve Corp. <br /> In 1938, he switched to the Democratic Party but was unsuccessful in his race for Illinois State Senate. That same year, he married again to Odessa Ireland. <br /> From 1940 to 1944 he served as Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago. In 1942, he was elected to the Illinois Senate from the Third District. Wimbish sponsored the Fair Employment Practices bill during his first term (The bill would not become law until 1961). He was re-elected in 1946 and 1950. He served as Democratic Committeeman from the Third Ward from 1948 to 1952. <br /> In 1958, he was elected Trustee of the Sanitary District, the position he held at his death.
