♣ In 1953, Harris, at the time an automobile salesman, and two other African Americans, Attorney A. T. Walden and Dr. Miles Amos, won a court battle to be allowed the right to qualify for election to the City Executive Committee. Harris lost the election to Amos. Walden ran unopposed.
